Fourth Class pupils had a very busy week during Engineers Week (February 27th -March 4th ). The week started with a visit to the classroom by Civil Engineer, Mr. Mick O’Donovan. The boys and girls learned about the different types of engineers that exist, for example, civil engineers, chemical engineers, aeronautical engineers, mechanical engineers, energy engineers and many more. Mick then played a short Maths game, linking Maths with Engineering. This was followed by a workshop on Bridge-building where the pupils carried out group experiments, discovering what type of structure is best for the Construction of Bridges.
On Wednesday,Feb. 29th, the boys and girls visited Blackrock Castle Observatory, where they first toured the Cosmos at the Castle Exhibition, learning about the universe and its origins and they even sent messages off to space!!
This was followed by an Electronic Circuit Workshop, presented by members of the Cork Electronics Institute, using Electronics Brainbox Kits. This was a fantastic experience for all the boys and girls, especially when some pupils even managed to make a circuit that received radio signals!!
Who knows, some of the exciting workshops during the week may just have inspired the pupils to become the Engineers of the future!!
